Mission
The Education Department of the UPR – Ponce, which offers the only Bachelor’s Degree Program in Elementary Education in the UPR System in the southern region the Island, envisions the teacher candidate as the center of the educational endeavor. The mission of the Program is to develop education professionals who have mastery of the content and pedagogical knowledge which will enable them to reflect upon and self- evaluate their teaching performance, and who are capable of constructing, sharing, and transferring this knowledge to become educational leaders. It proposes to develop in the teacher candidate’s serious commitment, the respect for student's different learning styles, and the ability to select from among the many means of assessment available to evaluate their own learning, and that of their students. It proposes to develop in the teacher candidates the knowledge, skills, and necessary dispositions to perform through reflective, and responsible actions at the personal, professional, and social levels.
The Mission of the Education Department is consistent with the Mission statement of the UPR System and that of the UPR- Ponce Campus. It shares with the other UPR institutional units the responsibility to contribute to the achievement of the Mission according to the General Bylaws of the University of Puerto Rico. It promotes a collaborative interaction between the Education Department and the other academic departments within the UPR - Ponce which expose teacher candidates to knowledge in the different content areas. The Education Department services the academic community with the administrative and organizational resources necessary to promote authentic and transformational learning.
