The mission of the Associate Degree in Science in Physical Therapy Program is "prepare Physical Therapist Assistants with the
competencies necessary to fulfill the roles and functions in an safe, legal, ethical and effective manner, in Puerto Rico and
elsewhere". This mission is framed framed within the mission of the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce and the Allied Health
Studies Department mission.
In accordance with the institutional mission, the program offers an education of excellence, maintaining a holistic and
comprehensive focus based on the appreciation of the humanistic and ethical values, in the cultural differences, and the
search of knowledge through a challenging environment where the student can explore his/her abilities and skills and his/her
responsibility to serve within his/her community; to prepare physical therapist assistants for a legal, safe, ethical, and
effective practice.
To fulfill its mission, it is expected that the program will obtains the support of the Institution to acquire the human,
financial, and physical resources necessary to achieve its goals and objectives; maintain the national accreditation granted by
the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and other higher
education accrediting agencies, and maintain a highly qualify faculty involved, not only in teaching but also in research, and
other professional and personal improvement activities.
